Artifacts

On this page, I outline my Individual Studies Bachelor's Degree and provide different artifacts in order to argue the validity of the degree.  I also give an explanation of what I learned from each course or experience.  Every link will take you to a Google doc of a particular artifact.  The link HERE is my Bachelor's Degree Proposal which outlines the grafted themes from all different courses for my Global Engagement, Arts, and Education emphasis.

For my proposal, I also created an Individual Academic Plan (IAP) that outlines all the different courses I took and which learning outcomes and objectives they specifically connect with. Visit HERE to see my IAP.  The PDF linked below is a different kind of document which showcases what my goals, objectives, and learning outcomes are and how they interact with each other. Course Work

Communication Internship (COMM 4900R)

Learning Outcomes the artifact maps to:

1. Be able to apply appropriate leadership, management, and administration principles through examination of theory and practical methodology in order to plan strategically, allocate resources, and coordinate people and resources.

2. Apply interpersonal skills and other processes of communication, relationship, trust building, and mutual persuasion by being able to resolve conflicts in ways that are favorable for all parties and by the development of an individualized ethical negotiating framework.

During this course, I had the opportunity to intern with a Special Education Teacher at Washington Elementary School through the communication department.  This document HERE is my final paper for the internship, required by my communication advisor. It talks about non-verbal communication which is vitally important for anyone to learn.  Observing and learning about non-verbal communication helped me with my communication and language skills in general and will help me in my future endeavors to work with children and international people. Below is a summary of how the artifact accomplished learning listed above:

1.        Identified the unique characteristics of the school system's organization, leadership, and politics through personal observation, some research, and in seeking staff feedback in all situations so that there was an open dialogue between the people I worked with.

2.       Cultivated patience by keeping calm and respectful in 100% of interactions with students where communication or understanding is difficult and still remained happy by the end of the day.

3.        Distinguished between the need to follow through with a command, consequence, praise, or correction choosing the most appropriate response to inappropriate behaviors 100% of the time.

4.        Improved active listening skills every day by helping students improve their listening and writing skills.

5.        Successfully arranged and implemented at several field trips through organized coordination with staff, parents, and site personnel and thereby gain essential event planning skills.

6.         Practiced ways to communicate more effectively when there was a language barrier and/or cultural difference by identifying how each student communicates so that I could build a stronger relationship with each child.

7.         My involvement with the school helped improve the education of the special aid students 10 fold through my diligence and example.

Ethics War Peace (PJST 3020), Issues Ireland (PJST 475R)

Learning Objectives the artifact HERE maps to:

1. Gain knowledge of world history and cultural awareness and sensitivity through study abroad opportunities, a variety of recreational activities and study of course materials in order to teach, plan, and arrange appropriate events and activities.

2. Apply interpersonal skills and other processes of communication, relationship, trust building, and mutual persuasion by being able to resolve conflicts in ways that are favorable for all parties and by the development of an individualized ethical negotiating framework.

3. Have developed the capacity to express themselves in a culturally coherent manner and also have the ability to move easily and effectively in the culture and society they are studying, by means of the language they study.

The paper for my Peace and Justice course was written after a Study Abroad in Northern Ireland.  During my study abroad in Northern Ireland, I learned about peace and conflict resolution which helped me understand culture and diversity.  After returning back and reflecting on my experience while writing the above paper, I realized I had really learned a new language while in Ireland; the language of peace.  And, of course, communication is a big part of language.

Fundamentals Mediation & Negotiation (BESC 3410), Advanced. Mediation & NegotiationLearning Objectives (COMM4200)

Learning Objectives these courses map to:

1. Apply interpersonal skills and other processes of communication, relationship, trust building, and mutual persuasion by being able to resolve conflicts in ways that are favorable for all parties and by the development of an individualized ethical negotiating framework.

2. Be able to apply appropriate leadership, management, and administration principles through examination of theory and practical methodology in order to plan strategically, allocate resources, and coordinate people and resources.

I took two different mediation courses during my studies.  Although these courses aren't directly related to communication and management, I learned crucial leadership and presentation skills through different assignments.  The Powerpoint linked HERE is from one of my mediation classes directly affected my ability to communicate information and instructions.  The PPT outlines some chapters in our textbook and was given as a team effort in front of the class.

5. Be able to use Marketing skills in order to make and implement a sales plan and execute principles and methods of showing, promoting, and selling products or services.

I grouped these courses together because they were taken at the same time or in preparation for a study abroad I did in China.  I learned so much from these different subjects and their class materials.  The different artifacts above directly connect to all of my learning objectives.  My study abroad in China was an amazing experience where I got to learn out culture, language, people, and where I gained a lot of my leadership, marketing, and even planning skills.  Both the Self-Introduction and Presentation artifacts were given in Chinese.  The Edge Project artifact and ASC artifact work hand in hand because my project was the whole reason I went to China and the ASC is a presentation about the American Study Center I worked at while I was in China.  While I was in China, I was able to be a panelist during an American Center for Cultural Exchange Conference and also help another student from Taiwan with a video project.  To view theses videos, you can scroll down to the video section towards the bottom of this web page.

For my International Business course, I learned about different cultures, how to do business, and a little bit about marketing.  HERE is an artifact for an assignment where I had to pick or create a product and sell it in another country.  I picked a cleaning product and pitched it like I was going to sell it in China.  HERE is another artifact but one I used for Management & Organization.  This artifact is a presentation on how to prepare for an interview.  In the videos below, I also have included one of me actually presenting this PPT.

In conclusion,  the courses taken and the experiences had enabled me to gain essential knowlege and skills in a variety of areas.

The video section below includes four different artifacts from various stages of learning during my college career as described above.
